Reading and Listening Practice
The BBC
The BBC has a huge website with a little of something for everyone. Start from the home page and take some time to visit pages that catch your interest.
You can find help for your English and have fun at Learning English. There are crosswords, quizzes, news stories with vocabulary exercises and podcasts.
The BBC home page also has links to sites dedicated to history, food, sports and more.
You can practice your listening comprehension every day with One Minute World News or one of the many other news videos.
If you want to try something a bit more difficult, go to one of the radio stations and download a podcast. Maybe you won't understand everything the first time you listen, but it is still good practice. And if you have it on your PC or on an MP3 player, you can listen as many times as you want.
National Public Radio
This site is not as big as the BBC, but it still offers a lot. In addition to music and news, it also offers special in-depth stories about unusual or topical events. A bonus for language learners is that many of the stories or interviews originally created for the radio are accompanied by tapescripts, so you can read along while you listen, or even better, after you listen and note down new words.
And just for fun, music lovers should check the Tiny Desk Concert. Every week a different musician plays a live concert in the journalist's office and gives a little interview. No tapescript for this, but the music is always good, no matter who is playing. And you can download the podcast of the show.
Voice of America
The Voice of America broadcasts news and information on the radio, television, and internet around the world. Some of the stories on the website are accompanied by podcasts so you can read and listen. A special part of the site, Learning English, is dedicated to English language learners. In this area, you can find simplified news stories, cultural information, and practice with podcasts, videos, grammar, words in the news, language games and crossword puzzles.
